Philip Seymour Hoffman has revealed that he struggled directing himself.

The actor stepped behind the camera for the very first time last week as he made his directorial debut with Jack Goes Boating.

The Oscar winner starred in the movie as well as being in the director's chair and he admits that he was now a fan of directing himself.

Speaking to The Press Association the actor said: "I didn't like directing myself.

"I like someone else telling me I'm not good, challenging me and putting a good, strong firm hand out there for me to take. Knowing I was the only one I could turn to was uncomfortable."

"I'd walk off, go in a room, do my acting prep and come back and be the actor.

"And that really took a shift of concentration and focus that was kind of immense."

Hoffman has already starred in The Ides of March this autumn and he will be returning later this month with Moneyball, which sees him team up with Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill.

Jack Goes Boating is out now.
