Jerry Bruckheimer has announced, via twitter, that filming on Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides has begun filming.

After all the will they, won't they go ahead? Who will direct now Gore Verbinski has left? And should there be a fourth movie at all? Jerry, Johnny Depp and co have started the shoot in Hawaii.

The movie sees Depp return to the much loved character of Captain Jack Sparrow and he is joined on the cast list by Geoffrey Rush, Penelope Cruz, Ian McShane and Kevin McNally.

With Verbinski gone it's Chicago director Rob Marshall who is helming the project and the film is thought to have a storyline that includes the Fountain of Youth.

The last Pirates of the Caribbean movie, At World's End, was seen on the big screen back in 2007, four years after we were first introduced to Sparrow in Curse of the Black Pearl.

Together the three movies grossed in excess of $2 billion at the global box office and saw the arrival of one of the biggest screen icons in over a decade.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is expected to sail into cinemas in May 2011.
