Robert Downey Jr has called The Avengers 'fantastic'.

The actor is all set to reprise the role of Tony Stark as some of the biggest Marvel comic heroes will be brought together.

Speaking to MTV the actor said: "[I]t's going to be fantastic," said Downey, jokingly adding, "Once I tear his script to smithereens and fix it, we’re going to have a great movie."

Iron Man, Captain America and Thor, the final two will have solo films out next year, will be joined by Black Widow, Hawkeye, Hulk and Nick Fury.

The movie will be directed by Joss Whedon, who has also penned the script with Zak Penn.

Downey Jr returned to the role of Tony Stark AKA Iron Man this summer with Iron Man 2. And while the film wasn't as big a hit with the critics this time around it was a huge success at the box office as it took over $621 million worldwide.

But Downey Jr has left the superhero movie behind him this week as he returns to comedy with Due Date, which sees him work with Todd Phillips.

The Avengers will hit the big screen in 2012.
