Samantha Morton says that she felt a huge responsibility to fans of the John Carter stories when she took on the role of Sola in the new movie.

The actress used motion capture to bring the Thark character to life and while she wanted to get the part right for the fans of Edgar Rice Burroughs' work she said the journey she went on with the character was an exciting one.

Speaking in London at the press conference to promote the movie the actress said: "Yes there was the nerve aspect of that was huge. But it was more to me about finding the spirit and being connected on that and understanding that.

"This character has a much bigger life and this is a birth of this person, this is the beginning of a very long journey; that is exciting because it is like having a secret.

"It was a huge responsibility but it was also a pleasure."

Morton teams up with Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins and Willem Dafoe in the Andrew Stanton movie, which is set to grace the big screen this week.

It is the first movie for Morton since The Messenger but she is also set to star in Decoding Annie Parker and Cosmopolis this year.

John Carter is released 9th March
