Sylvester Stallone

Sylvester Stallone

Sylvester Stallone went up against Harrison Ford for the role of Star Wars hero Han Solo - but the Hollywood hardman missed out on the part after failing to impress director George Lucas.

The Rambo star opened up about his 1975 audition in a recent web chat with fans and confessed he's glad the part went to Ford instead of him.

He explained, "Yes, as a matter of fact I did (try out for Solo) and it didn't meet with much approval.

"When I stood in front of George Lucas he didn't look at me once, obviously being very shy.

"Then I said, 'Well obviously I'm not the right type'. But it all worked out for the best since I don't look good in Spandex holding a ray gun."

Stallone is back on the big screen later this month with his new movie The Expendables, which also stars Jet Li, Jason Statham, Bruce Willis and Mickey Rourke.

The movie also sees Stallone back in the director's chair for the first time since Rambo.
