Cowboys and Aliens and The Smurfs tied for top spot at the U.S. box office this weekend.

Both movies took $36.2 million in their opening weekend to topple Captain America: The First Avenger from the top of the box office.

Cowboys and Aliens sees a return to the big screen for Daniel Craig as he teamed up with Harrison Ford and director Jon Favreau.

A spaceship arrives in Arizona, 1873, to take over the Earth, starting with the Wild West region. A posse of cowboys are all that stand in their way.

After just a week at number one Captain America: The First Avenger dropped to third in the chart but too a further $24.9 million this weekend.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 was also down two but it became the second movie of the summer to break $1 billion, following in the footsteps of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

Crazy, Stupid Love was the third and final new entry inside the top ten this week as it opened at number five.

Friends with Benefits, which sees Justin Timberlake team up with Mila Kunis, was down three at six while Horrible Bosses fell two to seven.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon was this week's biggest faller as it dropped four places from four to eight while Zookeeper and Cars 2 fell three to round off the top ten.
