Tom Hardy reveals that he was intrigued by his latest movie character Forrest Bondurant.

The actor is back on the big screen this September with new movie Lawless, which sees him team up with director John Hillcoat.

The movie is set in the Prohibition-era and follows the true story of the Bondurant brothers.

But it was the many sides to Forrest's character that really interested the British actor.

Speaking to Flicks and Bits the actor said: "I take characters as they come, characters that interest me, that have scope.

"And also, a diversity of different ranges and colours and characteristics that are interesting in finding paradoxes and dichotomies of man.

"[With Forrest, I was] like, 'How can somebody be so violent, yet at the same time be such a little boy?' Someone intrinsically innocent and naive and have such a heart, but then he'd do something on the other side that was so incredibly, horrifically horrible.

"And yet where the fulcrum is in the middle, someone that by the end of the film I want the audience to have the ability to care about that person."

Shia LaBeouf and Jason Clarke play the other two Bonderant brothers while Gary Oldman, Jessica Chastain and Guy Pearce are also on the cast list.

Hardy has already enjoyed box office success this year with his turn as Bane in The Dark Knight Rises. He is currently filming Mad Max: Fury Road.

Lawless is released 7th September.
