Viola Davis hoped that people would see in new movie The Help what she saw when she first read the script.

The Oscar nominated actress is set to return to the big screen later this month with the adaptation of the Kathryn Stockett novel - which also stars Emma Stone.

The movie topped the U.S. box office and grossed over $100m in America alone - not to mention it has been a huge hit with the critics.

And Davis is delighted at the respose that the movie had received.

Speaking to the Belfast Telegraph the actress said: "I was just motivated by fear and nerves and I was the neurotic acting student again, driving (director) Tate Taylor crazy, but hoping that people would see what I saw when I first read the script, which was the richness and the complexities of the characters.

"This is one of the first movies that humanises the maid and the domestic. We really find out who they were and found out that they weren't just someone in the background who came out for two lines and said a sassy line and then went back into the kitchen."

The movie and Davis' performance is already surrounded in Oscar whispers - don't be surprised is she picked up a Best Supporting Actress nod for her peformance.

The Help is released 26th October.
