The Nightmare Before Christmas

The Nightmare Before Christmas

With Christmas nearly upon us, it won’t be long before a host of familier films grace our screens, from Julie Andrews singing a few of her favourite things, to James Bond and his fondness for martinis - there’s never a dull movie moment over the holidays.

With this in mind, popular school club and education charity FILMCLUB, decided to take a look at the top festive films as watched by their 180,000 members.

Far from picking fluffy fables as their favourites, the survey conducted by FILMCLUB shows a new generation of filmgoers who are certainly not to be underestimated in their choice of film.

A range of critically-acclaimed works made the list for highest rated Christmas films, including some black and white classics, and the darkly magical  The Nightmare before Christmas.

Beating a host of other, more tradional treats it was Tim Burton’s fabulously eerie masterpiece which took the top spot for secondary schoolers.

Reece, age 12, commented: "Ever since I first saw this film I have been in love with the work of Tim Burton. This is a truly magical film that brings a brilliant story to life".

Fellow filmclubber Sean,15, agreed - "This film was far from a nightmare - it was a joy!. Each monster was filled with such character. This is a MUST see!"

60's film- The Grinch That Stole Christmas and 1946 film and It’s A Wonderful Life also made the top five, going to show that classics can still prove popular with youngsters.

Backing the vote, filmcubber Matthew, age 14, found It’s A Wonderful Life a surprising experience: "I must say I had my doubts before seeing this film, but I actually really liked it.

"It grips you until the final half hour, which is just Tear-jerking. It's Wonderful Life really does make you remember just how Wonderful your Life is. I’d Give it a Solid 5 Bags of Popcorn"

Of course some more typical children’s classics do feature on the list, bringing a solid dose of nostalgia to proceedings.

Home Alone, and Raymond Brigs’ The Snowman score highly, while storming in at number one for Primary Schoolers, Elf proves that kooky comic, Will Ferrell isn’t just for adults: 9 year old Rafia agrees - "I really liked Elf and I think it is the best Christmas film I have ever seen. It reminds you that you still need some Christmas spirit."

So why not make your child’s Christmas a REEL treat and show them, one of the top festive films as chosen by children across the country...
