Vikander is able to gain "great insight" into her characters by discussing her scripts with her dad, who is a psychologist.

She said: "I often send him my scrips and discuss my characters with him because he has such a great insight into the psychological process and human nature in general."

And her father's help was particularly useful when it came to researching her role as Gerda Wegender, the wife of transgender pioneer Lili Elbe (Eddie Redmayne) in 'The Danish Girl'.

She added: "My father has worked with transgender people himself and of course, that helped me to understand."

The 27-year-old actress also credits her father - who split from Alicia's mother when she was a child - for persuading her to appear in the 2012 Oscar-nominated Danish movie 'A Royal Affair'.

She told LOOK magazine: "[My parents] are both very important in my life and I've always had a close relationship with my father.

"In fact he was the one who convinced me to appear in 'A Royal Affair'.

"I had to study Danish for eight weeks but I saw it as a great challenge and I'm glad that I did it."
