American Hustle has brought The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug's reign at the top of the UK box office to an end.

American Hustle sees David O. Russell return to the director's chair and bring together an impressive cast list that includes Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence.

The film took £3.4 million in its opening weekend to narrowly pip The Desolation of Smaug to the top spot - it was a close run thing.

The second instalment of The Hobbit has so far taken in excess of $758 million at the global box office.

However, £3.2 million was not enough to see the film remain the UK's #1 film. It slipped just a single place to number two.

Frozen was also down one place at number three. It was revealed yesterday that Frozen will go head to head with Despicable Me 2 and Monster University for the Best Animated Film Bafta.

Last Vegas and Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones were both new entries at four and five.

Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues fell three places to six, while Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom was the fourth and final new entry at seven.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty was this week's biggest faller at eight, having dropped four spots. Walking With Dinosaurs was a three place faller at nine.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire over $831 million worldwide but slipped from seven to ten.
