Andy Serkis says he is glad to have played a more mature version of Caesar in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and didn't have to move on all fours all of the time.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is set to hit the big screen this week and sees Serkis reprise the role of Caesar: we were first introduced to the character in Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

The actor reveals that moving around on all fours was a 'thigh-burning' experience, and is hoping for more sitting down in the next film.

Speaking to the Press Association, the actor said: "Playing young Caesar, where I had to scamper around on all fours, was the biggest thigh-burning experience of all time.

"I'm very happy to now be playing the more mature and wise Caesar that can now walk around.

"Hopefully, in the next film, there will be a lot of 'armchair Caesar' where he can sit back, watch the telly and have a Dirty Martini."

This is the first big screen outing for Serkis since The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, and he is currently filming Star Wars: Episode VII.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes took an impressive $73 million at the U.S. box office over the weekend, toppling Transformers: Age of Extinction from the top of the box office.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is one of the most anticipated films of the summer, and is set to be one of the most successful.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is released 17th July.
