Benedict Cumberbatch has heaped praise on director Bill Condon, calling The Fifth Estate a ’beautiful movie’.

The Fifth Estate sees Cumberbatch team up with Condon for the first time as they being the story of WikiLeaks to the big screen: the British actor takes on the role of Julian Assange in the movies.

It was revealed earlier this year that Assange had written to Cumberbatch to persuade him not to take on this role, but the actor has described The Fifth Estate as ‘incredibly balanced’.

Speaking to The Independent the actor said:

"I think [director Bill Condon] has made a beautiful film - it's incredibly balanced. It's entertaining as well as intriguing.

"And what it should do is ignite a debate - that's exactly what should happen. And hopefully it will do that."

The Fifth Estate is the first of many projects that we will be seeing Cumberbatch in over the coming months, the next being The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

Cumberbatch is set to bring dragon Smaug to life, a character that we are yet to see in his full glory. And Cumberbatch says it was a difficult role to work on.

"A serpent with cold blood and a backbone - who is twice the size of the Empire State Building, breathes fire, is 400 years old and lives on a pile of gold in the middle of a mountain - is a little bit difficult to bring any reality to!"

The Desolation of Smaug is the second film in The Hobbit trilogy by Peter Jackson, and is a movie that will see Cumberbatch reunite with his Sherlock co-star Martin Freeman.

The Fifth Estate is out now.
