Blanchett was on the red carpet at the BFI London Film Festival earlier this week as Carol screened as part of the prestigious festival.

The actress admits that she has been a fan of author Patricia Highsmith's work for some time and called Phyllis Nagy's adaptation of the book 'extraordinary.' She also revealed that she is a huge fan of her co-star Rooney Mara, who she has teamed up with for the first time.

Speaking to the red carpet, the Oscar winning actress said: "I have long loved Patricia Highsmith and I think that Phyllis Nagy has written extraordinary screenplay. There have been a lot of cinematic adaptations of Highsmith's work because, of course, she is the mistress of crime but she does write interesting, complicated, dark characters.

"Then when Todd Haynes came on board, it suddenly moved from being a great screenplay to becoming a film. I really love Rooney (Mara) and so it was a perfect storm for me creatively."

Carol sees Blanchett reunite with director Haynes for their first project together since I'm Not There and this is the first film for the director since the Bob Dylan inspired film.

Blanchett is set to take on the title role of Carol, and older married woman that department-store clerk Therese (Mara) falls for. Sarah Paulson, and Kyle Chandler join Blanchett and Mara on the cast list.

Carol has been whipping up a storm and receiving critical acclaim on the festival circuit and is a movie that is already being tipped to be an Oscar contender - Blanchett and Mara are also expected to be in the race for the acting gongs.

Carol is released 27th November.
