David Fincher will not be making a superhero movie anytime soon after calling the genre 'dull'.

Superhero movies have continued to dominate the box office this year, but Fincher has revealed that he is not a fan of this type of film.

Speaking to The Playlist the director said: "I find it dull.

"I like to anticipate the energy of a movie audience that's waiting for the curtain to come up and thinking, 'Well, one thing we don't know about this guy is that we don't know how bad it can get'."

Fincher will be returning to the director's chair this autumn with an adaptation of the Gillian Flynn novel Gone Girl.

This is the first directorial outing for Fincher since The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo back in 2011, and is one of the most anticipated films of the autumn.

Gone Girl sees Fincher team up with both Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike for the first time, while Flynn herself has adapted her own novel into a screenplay.

Gone Girl is being tipped as possible Oscar contender with there no clear Best Picture frontrunner at the moment.

Gone Girl, Interstellar, and Inherent Vice are movies that are yet to enter the race, as none of the movies have played on the festival circuit.

Gone Girl is released 2bd October.
