Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes has made it a second week at the top of the U.S. box office, holding off the challenge from The Purge: Anarchy.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes has taken a further $36 million over the weekend - and has so far grossed in excess of $138 million at the U.S. alone.

The Purge: Anarchy is the highest new entry and comes just a year after the success of The Purge.

James DeMonaco is back in the director's chair for the film, while Frank Grillo takes on the central role.

Planes: Fire & Rescue and Sex Tape were also new entries inside the top ten this week, as they opened at three and four.

Former number one Transformers: Age of Extinction fell three places this week from two to five. However, the movie is still performing well internationally, and has grossed over $886 million.

It is the highest grossing film of 2014 so far, and could be the first movies to pass the billion dollar mark.

Tammy, 22 Jump Street and How To Train Your Dragon 2 were all also down three places at six, seven, and eight.

Maleficent was down one at nine, while Earth To Echo was the biggest faller at ten, down from last week's number six.
