Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes has toppled Transformers: Age of Extinction from the top of the U.S. box office.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is the second film in the franchise, and comes three years after the success of Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

Matt Reeves has taken over the director's chair this time around, and the film has grossed $73 million on its first weekend of release in the U.S.

Transformers: Age of Extinction has spent two weeks at the top spot, and has grossed over $752 million worldwide.

The movie slipped just a single place this week as it took a further $16.5 million for second.

Tammy and 22 Jump Street were both down two places at three and four, while there was no move for How To Train Your Dragon 2 at five.

Earth to Echo was a second none-mover at six, while horror film Deliver Us From Evil was down three at seven.

Maleficent was down one place at eight - it is the highest grossing none-sequel of the year so far - while Begin Again was up from fifteen to nine.
