Coming of age stories come in so many forms, from the likes of Mean Girls (2004), to Kick Ass (2010); the genre is a vast, open book and can adapt to almost anything. This year (2021), it seems we will be getting a deep and emotional story about a boy and his wish to be heard.

Dear Evan Hansen is a musical from 2015 (by Steven Levenson, Benj Pasek & Justin Paul), and has been adapted for the big screen ahead of its October (2021) release. The film will still be a musical, and at its centre a warm, endearing and teary tale of Evan.

Evan Hansen will be played by Ben Platt, a Tony, Grammy and Emmy Award winner. His role as a high school student may seem unbelievable to some, but his performance in the trailer alone suggests we can bypass his perhaps too-old character, in favour of a stunning performance.

Also starring in Dear Evan Hansen, is Amy Adams (Enchanted, The Woman in the Window), Julianne Moore (Kingsman: The Golden Circle), Kaitlyn Dever (Booksmart), Amandla Stenberg (The Hunger Games), Nik Dodani (Escape Room), Danny Pino (Fatale), with Colton Ryan (Uncle Frank) and DeMarius Copes.

Dear Evan Hansen follows Evan, a nervous, stressed-out student trying to navigate his way through high school, a tough time for many, especially Evan.

Evan simply seeks understanding; he wishes to be heard and more importantly, to belong. Unfortunately, this might be difficult in the cruel age of social media.

The trailer for this upcoming musical movie showcases the beauty of Dear Evan Hansen. While some deem Platt a little too old for the role, his performance may make that fact obsolete.

His character’s nervous, worried demeanour shrouds him like a cloak, and Platt seems to perfectly emulate what high school can feel like.

The trailer also evokes emotion, regret and concern as Evan seemingly tries up keep up appearances and keep his accidental lie a secret.

We see Evan’s struggles, but also the heartbreak of Evan’s supposed friend’s parents, Cynthia (Adams) and Larry (Pino). Their emotions are strongly felt, and the entire trailer is a tear-inducing rollercoaster that will definitely make a strong impact in cinemas.

The movie also breathes out a sense of love, mixed with complicated relationships, melancholy, and a whole range of other, perhaps relatable, emotions.

Dear Evan Hansen will be in cinemas on October 22nd, 2021.
