Johnson is set to star in Shazam!, which is based on the DC Comic, and was offered both characters. However, it was the villainous Black Adam that was the major draw for the actor.

Speaking to Digital Spy, the actor said: "I felt ultimately, and this is with all due respect to Shazam/Billy Batson, it's a mythology that I love; it's been with me for almost ten years now; what made me choose Black Adam?

"I just felt Black Adam was inherently more interesting to me because I felt there were more layers to Black Adam starting out as a slave and then ultimately becoming the anti-hero who we enjoy today."

We are not going to see Shazam! hit the big screen until 2019 and a director is yet to be announced for the project and no other cast is currently on board.

Three people who are on board the film are Billy Burch, Geoff Johns and Darren Lemke, and they are set to pen the screenplay for the movie.

Johnson is set to return to the big screen this week as he reprises the role of Luke Hobbs in Fast & Furious 7, which is the third film in the franchise that he has appeared in.

Fast & Furious 7 comes two years after the huge success of the sixth instalment - which is the highest grossing film in the series - and looks set to be one of the biggest movies of the year.

We are also going to be seeing Johnson in San Andreas and TV series Ballers this year. It has also just been announced that the actor is lending his voice to animation film Moana.

Moana is the latest film from Disney and while Johnson has been linked with the project for a few months, is has finally been confirmed that he is on board. The movie will also allow Johnson to show off his singing voice. Work on Moana is well underway and will be hitting the big screen in December.
