Ed Oxenbould has landed the lead role in Disney's adaptation of children's book 'Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day'.

The Australian child actor will play the titular character, while Jennifer Garner and Steve Carrell will play his parents, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The 1972 children's book, which was written by Judith Viorst, follows Alexander through the trials of a terrible day for his family after he wishes for them to experience the same troubles he has.

Miguel Arteta is directing and it is hoped the film will be ready for release by October 2014.

Oxenbould is best known for playing the main character in writer-and-director Matthew Moore's 2012 short film 'Julian', and according to his management company, he has been doing voiceover work for five years.

He has also been involved in ad campaigns for brands such as Cheerios and Smarties.

'Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day' will be produced by The Jim Henson Company and 21 Laps.

Carrell can currently be heard reprising his role as loveable reformed villain Gru in animated caper 'Despicable Me 2', while Garner recently began filming sports drama 'Draft Day'.
