Redmayne takes on the role of Stephen Hawking in the new biopic - which is directed by James Marsh - and has been receiving critical acclaim for his central performance ever since the movie started playing on the festival circuit.

Redmayne was nominated for Best Actor, while co-star Felicity Jones was nominated for Best Actress and the movie itself was nominated for Best Motion Picture, Drama.

Speaking about his nomination, Redmayne said: "I am beyond thrilled to be nominated alongside such a stunning quartet of actors. The fact that Felicity, Jóhann, and the film are nominated means the world.

"I am hugely grateful to the HFPA - and to Professor Stephen Hawking for his personal support in helping us to share his story with the world."

This is the first Golden Globe nomination of Redmayne's acting career, and comes just a day after he picked up a Best Actor nomination at the Screen Actors Guild.

Redmayne is joined by Steve Carell, Jake Gyllenhaal, David Oyelowo, and Benedict Cumberbatch in the Best Actor category - Redmayne, Cumberbatch and Oyelowo make up a trio of strong British contenders for the Golden Globe.

The Theory of Everything sees Redmayne team up with director Marsh for the first time, while Jones, Tom Prior, Harry Lloyd, and David Thewlis are also on the cast list.

This will be the first time that we have seen Redmayne on the big screen since the success of Les Miserables, and is just one of the movies that we will be seeing the British actor star in next year.

He has also completed work on sci-fi film Jupiter Ascending, which is the latest offering from directors Andy and Lana Washowski.

The Theory of Everything is released 1st January 2015. The Golden Globe winners will be announced 11th January.
