Elle Fanning's character Winnie

Elle Fanning says her Boxtrolls character has a 'lot of spirit' and is 'very feisty'.

Fanning lends her voice to the lead female character Winnie in the new animation film - which hits the big screen next week.

And the actress admits that there were many things about Winnie that she as excited to portray.

Talking about her character, Fanning said: "Winnie has a lot of spirit, and she’s definitely very feisty - and I don’t really show my sassy side, so I was excited to get away with talking like she does!"

Fanning had to work with an English vocal coach to find and perfect the voice and accent of Winne. But it was a process that she enjoyed.

"Perfecting the accent meant having her be more on the posh side, but she’s still a kid, and at the first session I was still being me too much.

"I eventually found Winnie’s voice, and I loved being her. I do feel that, like her, I’m up for an adventure."

Graham Annable and Anthony Stacchi are in the director's chair for the film, while Isaac Hempstead Wright, Ben Kingsley, Jared Harris, and Nick Frost join Fanning on the cast list.

The Boxtrolls is released 12th September.
