Emma Watson says she would have to read The Little Mermaid script first before committing to the role.

Watson has been linked to the role of Ariel in a new adaptation of the Hans Christian Anderson tales, which is set to be directed by Sofia Coppola.

And while it seemed that Watson was a red-hot favourite for the film, it seems that she is yet to see the screenplay.

Speaking to Variety, the actress said:

"I actually dressed up as Ariel for my fifth birthday. I mean I'd have to read it first ... I love Sofia so much."

This would be the second time that Watson has worked with Coppola, after the pair teamed up for the first time on The Bling Ring last year.

Last month is was revealed that Coppola was interested in helming this new film, but was keen to stay true to the original tale; which sees a broken hearted Ariel kill herself when the prince marries another woman.

As for Watson, she is back on the big screen next week, as she stars alongside Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly and Logan Lerman in Noah. Darren Aronofsky is in the director’s chair.

The actress is currently filming Regression with Ethan Hawke and director Alejandro Amenabar.
