Idris Elba

Idris Elba has revealed that one of the big reasons why he joined Pacific Rim was the chance to work with director Guillermo Del Toro.

Pacific Rim hits the big screen next week and follows Elba's character and the human race as they try to fight of an alien invasion.

Elba says he has been a fan of del Toro's work for many years and he was interested to find out what the visionary filmmaker was going to do with this script.

Speaking to Flicks and Bits the actor said: "One of the major appeals of wanting to work on this film was working with a director like Guillermo del Toro. I’ve admired his work and I think he’s a very interesting filmmaker.

"Once I read the script I was really intrigued as to what Guillermo was going to do with this amazing and ambitious script. I definitely wanted to be part of that. And Guillermo, he loves actors (laughs).

"Just watching the playbacks on set you realize that we are part of this huge comic book that’s in his head, and he’s molding us, as actors, bit by bit and frame by frame and line by line.

"He’s very, very pedantic and he shoots in small sequences, which is great, but it’s a very different discipline to learn. Guillermo’s just awesome."

Pacific Rim looks set to be one of the biggest sci-fi films of the years as Charlie Hunnam and Ron Perlman are also on board.

This kicks off a busy second half of the year for Elba as he has also completed work on Second Coming, Thor: The Dark World. Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom and No Good Deed.

Pacific Rim is released 12th July
