Jake Gyllenhaal admits that he doesn't take himself too seriously.

The actor turns his hand to the big budget blockbuster this week for the first time as he takes on the role of Prince Dastan in Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, based on the popular computer game.

The actor, famous for roles such as Donnie Darks, Brokeback Mountain and Brothers, reveals that he just wanted to have some fun making the movie.

Speaking to MTV News Gyllenhaal said: "I've seen a lot of my peers starting to not take themselves so seriously and make really fun, big films, and I was itching to try my hand at it.

"I think maybe as I've gotten a little bit older, I feel like I don't want to take myself so seriously anymore.

I think before, as much as those movies mean to me, and they continue to mean to me, it's time to have a little fun too."

And the actor has a busy year ahead of him with Nailed, Love and Other Drugs and Source Code all in the pipeline.

Prince of Perisa: The Sands of Time is released 21st May.
