Gunn is set to return to the director's chair for the highly anticipated sequel and has finished the script for the movie. Filming is set to get under way next year.

The movie will see Cooper return to reprise the role of Rocket and talked about the film in an interview with MTV News, where he appeared to reveal that Thanos - played by Josh Brolin - would play a huge part in the new film.

However, Gunn has taken to Twitter to assure fans that Cooper has not dropped a major spoiler for the film.

He wrote: "In response to all the stories coming out, Bradley Cooper didn't reveal anything. He just got the script and hasn't read it yet. I promise."

He went on to say that the main villain in the film has not yet been announced and Cooper was unaware as to who the villain was at the time that he did the interview with MTV News.

Cooper will not be the only familiar face returning for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, as Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista and Vin Diesel will also be back as Peter Quill, Gamora, Drax, and Groot. Karen Gillan and Benicio Del Toro are also set to return as Nebula and The Collector.

While the film's villain is being kept underwraps for now, it was revealed earlier this autumn that Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey turned down the chance to play the villain in the upcoming film.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 will be Gunn's first film since he enjoyed huge critical and commercial success with Guardians of the Galaxy last year.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 will be part of Phase Three of Marvel films and will be the first of three Marvel movies to be released that year; coming ahead of the new Spider-Man film and Thor: Ragnarok.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 is released 28th April 2017.
