James Mangold reveals that he felt liberated by the unusual elements and themes that he got to tackle in The Wolverine.

The Wolverine is the second stand alone film for this much loved character while Mangold takes over the director’s chair.

And Mangold hints that this movie is unlike anything else in this genre because it goes down its own path.

Speaking to Total Film the director said: “It plunges into these ideas of destiny, honour and revenge - as opposed to you standard superheroes sagas, which are generally about some gigantic villain out to destroy the earth, a city or a football stadium.

“Japan’s such an exotic location, in the sense that language and culture play such a huge role in the movie. Usually you don’t find that at all in these kinds of film.

“To be staking out our own ground and be saying something unique was really liberating for me”

Hugh Jackman returns to the role of Wolverine with this new movie as he reunites with Mangold for the first time since Kate and Leopold.

This is the first time that Mangold has tackled the superhero movie and it is the first big screen directorial outing for him since Knight and Day.

The Wolverine is released 25th July.
