James Mangold

James Mangold has revealed that he loved working in Japan on summer blockbuster The Wolverine.

Mangold is back in the director's chair for the new movie - that is based on the popular Japanese arc from the comic books.

The director said that he and the rest of the crew became immersed in Japanese culture as they were working on the movie. And despite facing some challenges it was a great experience for him.

Speaking to Screenrant the director said: "I loved it. I mean, it’s very challenging, but I loved it.

"We had a great time and we all love Japan and we’ve spent a great deal of time there, both mentally and physically, meaning like, even when we’re here (motioning to the set), we’re kind of in Japan.

"But, and we have so many Japanese people as part of the cast and kind of consulting with me and working on the film that it’s kind of this continuous immersion in Japanese culture. But, I love it."

The Wolverine is the first movie for Mangold since Knight and Day and is the second with Hugh Jackman after the pair worked together on Kate and Leopold.

The Wolverine promises to take this character to a darker and more vulnerable place than we have ever seen before.

The Wolverine is released 25th July.
