James Wan says it is 'refreshing' to explore a superhero like Aquaman because no one has really seen this character before.

Wan is in the director's chair for the solo Aquaman film, which is part of the ever-growing D.C. movie universe.

And while Aquaman is not one of D.C.'s most famous heroes, Wan likes the idea of getting to explore this character on the big screen for the first time.

Speaking to CBR about the upcoming film, the director said: "I actually do think there's something kind of fun, as well, to take a character where people don't quite know what to expect from him, or rather the expectation of him is quite low.

"I always say, it's very difficult when you're tackling something like 'Spider-Man' or 'Batman' that has been done so many times before. Whereas, it's actually really refreshing to take on something like 'Aquaman,' that no one has really seen before in this context, and make it your own."

Jason Momoa is set to take on the title role in the film and we got a very brief look at the character in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice earlier this year.

We are going to see Aquaman in the Justice League film before going on to star in his own solo movie. It has also been announced that Amber Heard will take on the role of Mera in the movie.

While Wan is no stranger to blockbuster movies with Fast & Furious 7 under his belt, it will be the first comic book movie of his directing career.

As for Wan, he has returned this summer with his new film The Conjuring 2, which is the sequel to the 2013 film and sees him reunite with Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson.

Aquaman is released on 27th July in the U.S. but no UK release date has yet been announced.
