For his latest role as The Joker in David Ayer's 'Suicide Squad', the 44-year-old actor took a method approach to the DC Comics character and "did a lot of things to create a dynamic to create an element of surprise" including sending his co-stars weird gifts like used condoms.

Leto is more than aware that the perception of him is as an eccentric personality, but he firmly believes everyone works in different ways, and this particular character warranted such strange behaviour, however, he accepts he won't be cast in straight forward roles.

Speaking to ShortList magazine he said: "I'm aware that a lot of people don't approach their work in the same way I do.

"But that's OK. Everybody has a different process and I respect other people's processes.

He added: "I guess when you get asked to play The Joker, or certain other roles I've played, it's kind of great that you're getting thought about for these transformational opportunities, these roles that are really challenging. I don't think I'm at the top of anyone's list for the next romantic comedy."

As well as the used condoms, Leto shocked Margot Robbie - who plays Harley Quinn, the sometime girlfriend of The Joker - by giving her a live rat.

The 26-year-old actress was surprised to receive the rodent, but remains convinced it aided her co-star's behaviour aided her performance as the super villain.

She said: "I was... surprised. I loved that stuff. Jared was doing half my work for me.

"Harley is very much a part of a relationship. To have such commitment from the other half made my job a thousand times easier, and a thousand times more fun.

"I didn't know what was going to happen when we got on set. It's exciting to act opposite that."

Will Smith, who plays assassin Deadshot, believes he didn't really "meet" Leto until filming wrapped because he stayed in character.

The 47-year-old actor said: "I mean I didn't meet him until two days ago! I literally did not! We worked together for six or seven months, and two days ago was really the first time we ever had a conversation."
