The Russos have been linked to the project for some time but Marvel have now announced that they will direct both part one and part two of the next Avengers film.

A statement on Marvel.com read: "As anticipation and excitement build to a fever pitch for Marvel's Avengers: Age of Ultron, the blockbuster sequel to the third-largest movie of all time, Marvel is proud to announce Joe and Anthony Russo will join the franchise as the directors of Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War - Part 1 and Avengers: Infinity War - Part 2.

The movies will hit the big screen in 2018 and 2019, and the films are expected to be filmed back to back from next year.

Joss Whedon has been at the helm of the first two Avengers films - Avengers: Age of Ultron is set to hit the big screen later this month - but speculation had been swirling for some time that he would not be returning for a third.

Anthony and Joe Russo are no strangers to the Marvel world having helmed Captain America: The Winter Soldier last year.

The Winter Solider was both a critical and commercial smash and went on to gross in excess of $714 million at the global box office.

The pair will be returning to the franchise this year, as filming on Captain America: Civil War is about to get underway. Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely have penned the screenplay for the already highly anticipated film.

The siblings have assembled a terrific cast for Civil War as Chris Evans - who will be back as Captain America - will be joined by Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Jr, Jeremy Renner, Sebastian Stan, and Anthony Mackie. Daniel Bruhl and Chadwick Boseman are set to be two of the new names on board.

Avengers: Infinity War - Part 1 is set for 27th April 2018 released. Avengers: Infinity War - Part II is released 26th April 2019.
