Anthony & Joe Russo

Joe Russo has described the Marvel Universe as a ‘giant mosaic’ and credits Kevin Feige with keeping every film connected to the ones before and after it.

Joe and Anthony Russo take over the director’s chair for Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the first time that we have seen this character on the big screen since events of Avengers Assemble.

And while all the Marvel films do fit together, Russo reveals that no constraints have ever been put on them and they are encouraged not to look too far ahead.

Speaking at the UK press conference at the Dorchester Hotel, Russo said: “It is, it is a giant mosaic, and it’s a very ambitious undertaking. It’s probably as ambitious as movies have ever gotten in terms of scale and the amount of films that they are making that are interconnected.

“The real secret sauce is Kevin Feige at Marvel, who is this auteur producer who is quite brilliant at what he does in terms of keeping that interconnectedness, but also focusing on the movie at hand. He’s very good at not putting any constraints on the movie he was working on because he has the belief that if you’re thinking about the future you’re not going to make the best movie you can right now.

“He really tries to make the best film he can and then figure out what the next move is from there, so it’s a very organic process.”

Captain America: The Winter Soldier will explore Steve Rodgers coming to terms with life in the modern world: something that is being explored thoroughly for the first time.

This is the last time that we will see Captain America on the big screen until he reunites with Iron Man, Thor, Black Widow, Hawkeye and Hulk for Avengers: Age of Ultron.

A third Captain America film has already been announced - it will be released in May 2016 - and will see Anthony and Joe Russo back in the director’s chair.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is released 26th March.
