Kevin Feige says that Doctor Strange is a character that he has been 'interested in' for 'many many years'.

Feige was at the Barcelona CineEurope event to talk about Phase 3 of Marvel films. Phase 2 will come to a close next year with Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Phase 3 will kick off with Ant-Man, while Captain America 3 is also part of the schedule. Doctor Strange is also expected to be another of the new franchises: it is also one that Feige has been keen to explore.

Speaking at the event, Feige said: "Scott Derrickson has been announced as the director. Doctor Strange is a character that I’ve been interested in for many, many years and that I’ve talked about in interviews for probably 14 years, because I believe it’s very, very important for us to explore every nook and cranny of the comic-book universe and we’ve done the street-level heroes, and we’ve done the billionaire superheroes [on Earth].

"We’ve now done the cosmic side with Thor and Avengers and most obviously with Guardians, but there’s a whole other side of the Marvel comics, which is that supernatural side - the interdimensional side of the Marvel universe, and Doctor Strange is, I believe, our entry point into that other realm, which has dozens of characters and storylines all of its own."

Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hardy and Jared Leto are some of the names that have been linked to the role of Doctor Strange.

Marvel will introduce us to another new franchise this summer, as Guardians of the Galaxy hits the big screen.

Filming on Avengers: Age of Ultron is underway, with Joss Whedon back in the director's chair.
