Neeson has held discussions about taking the central role in 'Felt', a drama about Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein's notorious Watergate source, who was originally known as Deep Throat but was later revealed to have been FBI agent W. Mark Felt.

The scandal ultimately led to the resignation of the US President Richard Nixon, and Neeson has been offered the role of Mark Felt, according to Deadline.

The 63-year-old star would work from a script penned by Peter Landesman, who also wrote the American crime thriller 'Kill the Messenger' in 2014.

Meanwhile, Neeson has previously revealed that the success of the 'Taken' franchise has created a wider range of career opportunities, but he also conceded he can't appear in action movies for too much longer.

He shared: "I'm in a very, career-wise, great place. The success certainly of the 'Taken' films, Hollywood seems to see me in a different light.

"I get sent quite a few action-orientated scripts, which is great. I'm not knocking it. It's very flattering. But there is a limit of course."
