Matthew McConaughey reveals he has been looking to tackle new challenges in his acting career.

In the last couple of years we have see McConaughey take on a range of different roles such as the Lincoln Lawyer, Magic Mike and Killer Joe; roles that have really changed the direction of his career.

McConaughey will be back on the big screen in the new year with Dallas Buyers Club, and he admits that he was looking for something new in the roles that he was taking on.

Speaking to Empire the actor said: "I wanted to shake some things up and do different things in my career, and I’ve recently said no to a lot of things that maybe I’d have said yet to ten years ago.

"I was really looking for a new challenge, new original characters where maybe you think, ‘ I haven’t seen that before’, or, ‘Here’s a character that lives on the fringe’".

Dallas Buyers Club sees McConaughey take on the role of AIDS sufferer Ron Woodroof in a hard-hitting biopic film. The movie follows Woodroof as he starts to illegally import anti-viral drugs to help fight the disease.

McConaughey has already bagged a Golden Globe nomination for his central performance, and looks set to also get an Oscar nomination in early 2014.

We are also going to be seeing McConaughey lead an all-star cast in Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi epic Interstellar.

Dallas Buyers Club is released 7th February 2014.
