Mel Gibson has revealed that a sequel to The Passion of the Christ could be a possibility.

Gibson was in the director's chair for the 2004 film, which depicted the final twelve hours of Jesus' life. And now he may return to make a film about the Resurrection.

However, Gibson admits that there is nothing set in stone at this moment in time.

Speaking to evangelist Greg Laurie at SoCal Harvest, the director said: "We're talking about that. Of course, that is a huge undertaking. And you know, it's not The Passion 2. It's called The Resurrection. Of course, that's a very big subject and it needs to be looked at because we don't want to just do a simple rendering of it - you know, read what happened...

"But in order to read it, experience and explore probably deeper meanings of what it's about, it's going to take some doing and Randall Wallace is up to the task."

The Passion of the Christ was one of the most talked about and controversial movies of 2004. It went on to gross $611 million at the box office and ended the year as the fifth highest-grossing film.

The Passion of the Christ was only the third feature film for Gibson as director and followed The Man Without a Face and Braveheart.

Gibson is set to return to the director's chair later this year with Hacksaw Ridge, his first directorial outing since Apocalypto in 2006.

The movie follows Army medic Desmond T. Doss, the first conscientious objector in American history to be awarded the Medal of Honour for his bravery during the Second World War.

Andrew Garfield will take on the central role of Doss and is joined on the cast list by Teresa Palmer, Luke Bracey, Hugo Weaving, Sam Worthington, and Vince Vaughn.
