Naomi Watts could relate to Princess Diana's "human problems".

The 44-year-old actress plays the late British royal in biopic 'Diana' and insists she could "identify" with her relationship troubles.

Naomi has been in a relationship with Liev Schreiber - with whom she has sons Sasha, six, and four-year-old Sammy Kai - since 2005, but previously had failed romances with director Stephen Hopkins and actor Heath Ledger.

She told the Daily Telegraph newspaper: "She had really human problems we have all seen at one point or another in our lives, and looking for love is something we can all identify with.

"I spent a couple of years in and out of a few relationships that I thought were going in the right direction but they didn't end up that way and I was sad and lonely in between.

"But Diana did connect with someone despite the breakdown of her marriage and that's the uplifting part of the story."

Diana divorced Britain's Prince Charles in August 1996, one year before her death in a Paris car crash.

She was then in a relationship with heart surgeon Hasnat Khan, but Naomi has yet to meet him as he has distanced himself from the movie.

She explained: "I didn't get a chance to meet him. We were told not to go there because he was not interested in any kind of focus on his relationship or talking about it.

"He spoke when he had to and I actually got quite a bit of information out of his testimony at the inquest into her death, which was quite helpful."
