Peter Jackson says he is excited about starting to work on the third Hobbit movie.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey hit the big screen at the end of last year and kicked off what will be a three film adventure.

The movie grossed over $1 billion at the global box office as Peter Jackson took audiences back to Middle Earth.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug will hit the big screen at this end of this year and the director is already looking ahead to the third movie.

Writing on Facebook the director said: "A lot of that movie was shot nearly a year ago, so I'm looking forward to seeing it come alive, shot by shot in the cutting room.

"It's like assembling one of those complex 2000-piece jigsaw puzzles."

The Hobbit: There And Back Again will bring this epic saga to a close in 2014 and it set to be an exciting conclusion to another great trilogy from the director.

It is going to be a busy couple of years for Jackson because as well as the two Hobbit movies to put the final touches to he is also going to start work on The Adventures of Tintin: Red Rackham's Treasure.

This is the second Tintin movie and will once again see him team up with Steven Spielberg; this time Jackson will direct while Spielberg is on producing duties.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is released 13th December
