Pixels has seen off the competition to top the UK box office, despite a series of awful reviews from the critics.

Pixels

Pixels marks the return of Adam Sandler to the big screen and is another box office hit for the popular actor. Directed by Chris Columbus, Pixels follows a group of gamers who are called upon to save the earth from aliens who have invaded with video game characters.

The movie took £2.6 million in its opening weekend to comfortably topple Fantastic Four from the top spot and hold off the challenge from the other big movies that were vying for the top spot.

Inside Out was the only movie on the up this week as it jumped a single place from three to number two - it was also the only movie that had a chance of stopping Pixels from claiming the top spot.

Mission: Impossible: Rogue Nation swapped places with Inside Out this week as it fell from two to number three. The Man From U.N.C.L.E. was the second highest new entry inside the top ten, as it opened at number four.

The movie marks the return of Guy Ritchie to the director's chair and I was expecting it to feature more in the race for the #1 spot. The movie sees Henry Cavill team up with Armie Hammer and it grossed £1.4 million over the weekend.

Trainwreck is a movie that has been winning over the critics and performing well at the U.S. box office and the Amy Schumer written comedy opened at number five.

Fantastic Four was one of this week's biggest fallers as the superhero film dropped five places from number one to number six - the movie could well struggle to stay inside the top ten next week.

Southpaw was also down this week as it dropped three places from four to seven, while Minions fell a single place to number eight. Minions is the highest grossing animation film of 2015 and is quickly closing in on the $1 billion barrier.

Absolutely Anything was the fourth and final new entry inside the top ten as the Simon Pegg comedy opened at number nine, The Gift was the second five place faller on the chart this week as the psychological thriller was down from five to number ten.
