Scott is returning to the franchise next year as cameras on Alien: Paradise Lost are due to start rolling.

And the director says that Alien: Paradise Lost will be followed by another sequel that will start to answer some of the big questions that we all have about the sci-fi series as a whole.

Speaking to IGN, the filmmaker said: "Prometheus 2 will start getting shot in February and I've already begun now so I know what the script is.

"Then there will be another one after that and then maybe we'll back into Alien 1, as to why? Who would make such a dreadful thing?"

It was back in 2012 when Prometheus hit the big screen and went on to be both a box office success and a critical hit. The sequel will see Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender reprise the central role of Elizabeth Shaw and Michael.

There is still no word as to who will be joining Rapace and Fassbender on the cast list for the already highly anticipated sequel.

Scott has been enjoying critical and commercial success this autumn with his latest film The Martian, which is based on the book of the same name by Andy Weir and starring Matt Damon in the central role.

The movie has already grossed over $460 million at the global box office and is being tipped as a potential Oscar contender. The movie really could be in the running for Best Picture while Scott could fine himself in the Best Director race.

Alien: Paradise Lost is set for a 2017 release.
