Robert Downey Jr has hinted that he would like to make more Iron Man movies after the release of the third film in the franchise this summer.

The actor signed up to film three standalone Iron Man films – a contract that he will have honoured with the release of Iron Man 3.

But Downey Jr admits that he still loves the character and it doesn’t look like he wants to leave Tony Stark behind any time soon.

Speaking to Empire the actor said: "Let's just say that the only thing I ever let go of had claw marks in it.

"There's a little bit of soul reclamation going on. I feel that the first time I played Tony, I did it best. Sorry! The affinity with Tony now is - how do you sustain something?

"I'm not stupid, I like to play ball, I love the company, I love the character, and the business side of things, I'm not too picky about that either."

As well as the Iron Man movies Downey Jr also enjoyed the billion dollar success of The Avengers last summer and a second film is set to go ahead for 2015.

At the moment it is not yet clear what the future holds for Downey Jr and the Iron Man franchise except that Iron Man 3 is set to be a huge hit.

Iron Man 3 is released 26th April.
