Ryan Gosling and Shailene Woodley turned down 'Fifty Shades of Grey'.

The A-list actor and the 'Descendants' actress are just some of the big Hollywood names who reportedly declined the opportunity to play Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele in Universal's big screen adaptation of E.L. James' best-selling erotic thriller, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

This week it was confirmed that 'Pacific Rim' actor Charlie Hunnam would play bondage-loving Grey in the movie, while Dakota Johnson - daughter of Melanie Griffith - has been cast as his virginal paramour.

Gosling reportedly turned down the part early on in the casting process due to a lack of interest, while 'Tron: Legacy' actor Garrett Hedlund bowed out because he "couldn't connect with the character".

As for protagonist Anastasia Steele, Woodley was reportedly willing to strip down for the saucy role, but ultimately had to decline due to promotional duties on her new movie 'Divergent', which is expected to launch a 'Hunger Games'-like franchise.

Alicia Vikander, Imogen Poots and Elizabeth Olsen were all considered for the part, too, but director Sam Taylor-Johnson reportedly set her heart on Dakota Johnson, who landed the part.

'Fifty Shades of Grey' is set for release in August 2014.
