Actor Sebastian Stan is enjoying a wealth of unique roles right now, playing Bucky Barnes in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier at one moment, before stepping into the shoes of Tommy Lee in Hulu original series, Pam and Tommy.

Incredibly versatile, the star has well and truly broken through the metaphorical glass ceiling, picking up fans across the globe thanks to his jaw-dropping performances to-date.

Now, as he approaches 40 years of age, he has spoken a little bit about what drives him when it comes to picking up new roles.

Chatting to IndieWire, he explained: “More and more as I’ve gotten older, when I read something that really kind of freaks me out a little bit and I get the voice that’s like, ‘Don’t ever go near this,’ then I’m more drawn to it as a result. I find usually that fear is a good indicator of something that I have to sort of step into perhaps to understand better.”

The comments come ahead of the debut of new film Fresh, which will see Stan step into the shoes of a man who at first appears to be romantic, but who quickly turns out to have a taste for flesh of the human kind...

Yes, he's playing a cannibal. Not exactly what you'd expect from Stan, despite his varied list of acting credits. Still, it's a role that has already seen him lavished with praise, following its debut at the Sundance Film Festival back in January of this year (2022).

What's exciting for Stan, is that he's now able to take these risks with the stranger roles, because he is such an established name. He could step into a project that may not live up to the lofty expectations set for him due to his past work, but he's fortunate enough in that he can fall back on an incredible catalogue of past performances.

It's this sort of freedom that those working in the acting business dream of. Exactly how Stan's decision-making will shape the next few years of his career remains to be seen, but one thing's for sure; we'll all be watching!

Fresh will debut on Hulu in the United States and Disney+ under the Star banner in Canada on March 4th, 2022. The film comes to Disney+ in the UK and Ireland on Friday, March 18th, 2022.
