Yesterday (April 8th, 2022) saw the release of the trailer for magical upcoming Disney+ Original, Sneakerella, which aims to tell a classic tale in an all-new and thrilling movie

The feature is set to premiere on the popular platform next month (May, 2022), and has the amazing team behind Descendants, High School Musical and ZOMBIES working hard to make it a hit.

Sneakerella will be a pop/hip-hop musical, set in the wondrous subculture of New York City (NYC), and puts a completely fresh, modern and contemporary twist on the Cinderella story.

El (Chosen Jacobs) is a hopeful sneaker designer from Queens. He works as a stock boy in a shoe store, and hides his incredible artistic talent from others.

However, sparks fly after an encounter with Kira King (Lexi Underwood), the daughter of sneaker royalty, if you will. El is captivated by this princess charming, but doesn’t have the confidence to go after her, nor his biggest dreams.

Despite his reservations, El receives a push from his best friend, who tells him to just go for it; El then finds the courage to lace up, and dream big!

Joining Jacobs and Underwood in this magical re-telling, is John Salley, Devyn Nekoda, Juan Chioran, Bryan Terrell Clark, Kolton Stewart, Robyn Alomar, Yvonne Senat Jones and Hayward Leach.

Sneakerella is a Disney+ original movie from Disney Branded Television, directed and co-executive produced by Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum. Jane Startz and Rachel Watanabe-Batton serve as executive producers.

The teleplay for the feature was written by David Light and Joseph Raso, Tamara Chestna and Mindy Stern, and George Gore II, and is based on a story by Stern and Gore, and Light and Raso. Chestna also serves as co-executive producer.

Sneakerella is set to debut exclusively on Disney+ on May 13th, 2022.

While this kind of film isn’t my thing, I do think it sounds like a wonderful, charming re-telling of a classic we all know well.

For Disney to put a male character in the role of Cinderella is very bold, and a choice I absolutely love.

The trailer shows a great deal of creativity being poured into it, as we’ve come to expect with Disney, and El seems like a brilliant character, with Jacobs looking to be perfect for the lead role.

Despite the trailer coming across as a little cheesy, however, I think the film could be decent, in spite of the novelty.
