The script for Star Wars Episode VII is expected to be finished by January.

J.J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan have teamed up to pen the screenplay: Abrams will also be in the director's chair for the film.

Michael Arndt had originally started working on the screenplay before Disney bought LucasFilm, Abrams and Kasdan wanted to make changes to that script and took over writing duties.

Speaking at an event hosted by Variety over the weekend, Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn also revealed the highly anticipated sequel has a budget of at least $200 million.

Variety journalist Marc Graser tweeted: "Disney expects to get script for Star Wars 7 in January. No budget for movie although studio wouldn't be surprised if it costs $200 million."

Star Wars Episode VII is a film that has been surrounded in rumours all year as no casting announcements have yet been made.

All we do know is that R2-D2 will be returning to the popular franchise.

The likes of Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher have been tipped to reprise their roles.

While Saoirse Ronan, Benedict Cumberbatch, Ryan Gosling and Simon Pegg are just some of the names that have been linked to the film.

Star Wars: Episode VII is set to be released on December 18, 2015.
