Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Yes, Star Wars: The Force Awakens has been the juggernaut that we all expected it to be as it stormed to a gross of $238 million at the U.S. box office alone - leaving its nearest rival totally out of sight.

The Force Awakens is the first Star Wars movie in a decade and was the most anticipated film of the year, as J.J. Abrams took over the director's chair. It would seem that the movie has not disappointed as both critics and audiences have been raving.

The movie has been breaking records just about everywhere and looks on course to easily cruise to $1 billion at the box office. So far, the movie has grossed $517 million worldwide.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip was the second of five new entries inside the top ten as it opened at number two - a very long way behind Star Wars.

This is the fourth Alvin and the Chipmunks movie to hit the big screen and took $14.4 million in its opening weekend. Sisters, which sees Amy Poehler reunite with Tina Fey, was also new in at number three.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 has spent four weeks in the number one spot but slipped three this week to number four. The movie is closing in on a worldwide gross of $600 million as it has taken $595.5 million at the global box office so far.

Creed fell one place from four to number five, while The Good Dinosaur fell out of the top five as it slipped three places to this week's number six. Krampus was down two places at number seven.

This week's biggest faller came in the form of In The Heart of the Sea, which dropped from two to number eight. The movie, which is based on the true story that inspired Moby Dick, marks the return of Ron Howard to the big screen. The film is set to open in the UK on Boxing Day.
