The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has become the fifteenth film to join the billion dollar club.

An Unexpected Journey is the first instalment of Peter Jackson's The Hobbit trilogy as the director took us back to Middle Earth for the first time in almost a decade.

The film has so far grossed $1,001 billion worldwide to place it fifteenth on the all time list.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey becomes the fourth film of 2012 to break the billion dollar mark as it follows in the footsteps of The Dark Knight Rises, Skyfall and Avengers Assemble.

This is also the second billion dollar movie for Jackson after The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King achieved this feat nine years ago.

The Return of the King is currently sixth on the all time list having grossed over $1,119 billion at the end of it's theatrical run.

Martin Freeman led the cast as Bilbo Baggins with the likes of Ian McKellan, Andy Serkis and Cate Blanchett all returning to roles.

The second instalment will hit the big screen in December.
