Argo was the toast of Hollywood last night as it scooped the Best Picture Oscar.

The Ben Affleck directed movie was the favourite going into the awards last night after triumphing at the Baftas, Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild and Director's Guild of America.

Affleck himself may have been overlooked in the Best Director category but it was a great night for the political thriller as it also won Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Editing.

But it was fellow adaptation Life Of Pi that was the biggest winner on the night as it scooped four gongs - including Best Director for Ang Lee; his second win from three nominations.

Life of Pi also won Best Cinematography, Score and Visual Effects.

Daniel Day Lewis made history as the first actor to win three Best Actor Oscars as he was recognised for his work in Lincoln.

The British actor was the favourite for the award as he saw off the competition from Hugh Jackman, Joaquin Phoenix, Denzel Washington and Bradley Cooper.

Jennifer Lawrence triumphed in the Best Actress category for her stunning performance in Silver Linings Playbook.

This is the second Best Actress nomination for Lawrence after picking up a nod for Winter's Bone.

Anne Hathaway had been the red hot favourite for Best Supporting Actress for Les Miserables and there were no surprises as she triumphed.

Best Supporting Actor was the most wide open category of the night as Alan Arkin, Tommy Lee Jones, Christoph Waltz, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Robert De Niro were all previous Oscar winners.

But it was Waltz who won for his role in Django Unchained as he collected his second Best Supporting Actor Oscar.

It was a good night for Django Unchained as Quentin Tarantino won for Best Original Screenplay.

There was also more British success as Adele won Best Song for Skyfall; that was one of two Oscars for the Bond film as it also won Sound Editing.
