Whether they make you laugh or cry, some of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) characters have said some utterly fantastic lines over the years. From intense, stern words, to dialogue with a little humour thrown in; the MCU really knows how to write a memorable line.

Captain America – I could do this all day.

Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) can be seen as the do-gooder of the Avengers; he seems to see everything in a matter-of-fact light, and will always do what’s right, even if no one is grateful for it.

This famous line was first spoken in the 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger to a bully; Rogers has said this line a few times since. The hero states this while fighting Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) in Captain America: Civil War, as he battles for what he believes is right; the continuation of this line shows that he will never give up – quite valiant really.

Also, a past version of Rogers states that he can “do this all day” in Avengers: Endgame, to which present day Rogers replies “yeah I know”, as this line is undoubtably now something of a running joke.

Thanos – Fine. I’ll do it myself .

After the finale of Avengers: Age of Ultron, we see Marvel’s big bad villain in an end credits scene, angry at those who have not aided him in his plan as they promised.

Annoyed at Loki’s (Tom Hiddleston) failure to launch a successful attack and steal an Infinity Stone, and Ronan’s (Lee Pace) failure to bring him another Stone, Thanos (Josh Brolin) decides he will take this task upon himself in a menacing scene showing the audience the villain’s Infinity Gauntlet; the weapon with which Thanos will destroy the Universe.

Black Panther – In times of crisis, the wise build bridges while the foolish build barriers.

In the post-credits scene for 2018’s Black Panther, T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) speaks a very deep and knowledgeable line, marking Wakanda’s decision to share their technology and science with the rest of the world.

From a man who has lost his father and is struggling to take his place as king, this line is the perfect way for the character to symbolise that he has grown into his new role and is ready to lead.

He silently acknowledges that he was the one who built a barrier, but now he is ready to replace those with bridges that can help the whole world; an iconic line that sticks with us even now.

Vision – Well… I was born yesterday.

Another iconic line from Avengers: Age of Ultron has Vision (Paul Bettany), the living embodiment of Tony Stark’s assistant JARVIS, utter a line that sums up the character well within this movie.

After being called naive by a robot created by Ultron (James Spader), Vision states that he was indeed “born yesterday”, utilising the common phrase and making it a subtly funny moment. This character may never understand human customs, but seems to really get how to deliver an amusing line.

Gamora - I would be grateful, to die among friends.

Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) was what many fans thought to be an odd addition to the MCU, but it turned out that this unlikely group of heroes made a big impact.

Gamora (Zoe Saldana) starts off as a hostile and cruel character, only interested in herself, and has no qualms in hurting others. However, throughout the movie she becomes kinder, and seemingly happier.

When it is decided that in order to stop Ronan from wiping out a planet called Xandar, the group must sacrifice their lives. Gamora states, “I have lived most my life surrounded by my enemies. I would be grateful, to die among friends.”

This line shows the wonderful change and life-affirming journey this character has gone through.

Spider-Man – You have a metal arm? That is awesome dude!

Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is simply amazing, we’re sure you can agree with us on this. In his first debut as the new webbed-wonder, our latest Peter Parker gets a bit carried away.

In Captain America: Civil War (2016), Spider-Man is told to “web ‘em up” by Iron Man (Downey Jr.), and in doing so comes face-to-face with Bucky (Sebastian Stan). As they fight, Spider-Man blurts out “You have a metal arm? That is awesome dude!” before being hurled across the room by Falcon (Anthony Mackie).

This is the perfect line to sum up Holland’s Spidey; he tends to get overexcited, and him nerding out over Bucky’s arm in the middle of a fight is definitely not the time to do so – making it the perfect time for Spider-Man.

Iron Man – I am… Iron Man.

Perhaps the most memorable and heartbreaking moment in the MCU. After over 10 years of being Iron Man, Tony Stark sacrifices not only himself, but his future with his daughter, in order the save the universe.

While facing off once again against Thanos, Stark bests him by stealing the Stones from the villain’s Gauntlet and placing them on his own. As Thanos states that he is “inevitable”, Stark states that, “I… am Iron Man” before snapping his metal fingers and reducing Thanos and his army to dust.

Everyone involved in this war simply stops. Every character is in awe and shock at the sacrifice of the man who started it all. Spider-Man begins to let tears fall, and Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) tells him that he “can rest now”.

If this isn’t the most memorable line then we don’t know what is. The line has travelled from 2008’s Iron Man all the way to the end; and what a perfect line for our fallen hero to utter.
