I know you all have your favourite bands of 2008 but with a new year come a whole host of new talent to set your musical feelers upon. We at FemaleFirst have decided to give you a head-start with 10 of our favourite up and coming rock stars.
Although a couple of these have been floating around already this year, thatâs no excuse to ignore them; because theyâre a bit bloody good, and if you tell all your friends abut them now, youâll look dead cool (and like you know everything about music!) when they make it big in 2009.
1. Attack! Attack!
Melodic rock goodness from the Valleys comes this way. Their self-titled debut album, released in November, was produced by Stuart Richardson of the Lostprophets and has already propelled the band onto the rock radar. Shows with Lostprophets, Funeral For A Friend and The Blackout hasnât hurt either. Next single, âYou and Meâ in February looks set to further continue the impressive rise of Attack! Attack!
2. exlovers
The vocal partnering of Peter and Laurel immediately makes exlovers standout from the current pack of indie merchants doing the rounds. Their performance at last yearâs Latitude festival certainly got tongues waggling and recent single âJust a Silhouetteâ only turned the hype meter up further. With the release of their next single âPhotoboothâ at the end of February, we reckon more hype is on the cards for the London quintet.
3. Twin Atlantic
Beardy quartet from Glasgow who created an almighty fuss in 2008 with their debut EP, âA Guidance From Colourâ and follow up single âWhat Is Light, Where Is Laughter?â, as well as shows alongside Biffy Clyro, The Subways, The Smashing Pumpkins and Finch. The band who just wrapped up their first headlining tour of the UK, enter the studio in January to begin the recording of their debut album.
4. Will and The People
Will Rendle is on a mission: the 22 year old singer wants to bring pogo back, an idea which we fully endorse! Weâve been lucky enough to get a sneak preview of material from his debut album, due out next year, and weâre hooked. Theyâre also influenced by the likes of Bob Marley, The Specials and The Police which ticks another box with us. Theyâve even supported The Police, as well as touring with The Hooisers. Itâs all in place for Will and The People in 2009.
5. Young Guns
Despite still gearing up for their first release in February, we predict big things for the boys from Buckinghamshire. With just the right blend of big riffs and hook conscious choruses, forthcoming single âIn The Nightâ should serve as the perfect introduction. Catch them on the upcoming We Are The Ocean UK tour and see for yourself.
6. Daniel Merriweather
Famed for singing on Mark Ronsonâs reworking of âStop Meâ, Daniel is about to step into the limelight himself and blow the charts away. With a single coming out in February and the album following in April, he is definitely a huge tip for 2009.
7. Pendulum
The DnB juggernaught rolls on with the next single from the bandâs âIn Silicoâ album, coming hot on the heels of their completely sold out UK tour, including two nights at Brixton.
8. In Case Of Fire
Hotly tipped to be the breakthrough rock band of 2009, In Case Of Fire will be releasing their new single and album after having performed on the Kerrang! tour in January.
9. Shinedown
Shinedown released the first single from forthcoming album âThe Sound of Madnessâ last week. âDevourâ has received support from rock fans and media nationwide and the bandâs appearance as main support on Disturbedâs recent UK dates was an undeniable success.
Watch out for these guys as they embark on their first headline tour of the UK next year in preparation for their album release, having already achieved considerable success in the US with âThe Sound of Madnessâ debuting in the Billboard Top 10 earlier this year.
10. Defend Moscow
Defend Moscowâs debut single is set for release on the Kids label, the same label that launched the careers of The Wombats, Band of Horses and The Whip. If that wasnât a sure fire reason why weâre tipping Defend Moscow, new single âManifestoâ should seal the deal for your ears.
Placebo â Album TBC Placebo look ready to make a welcome return with a new album to come in 2009. So Brian Moloko fans, prepare the eyeliner once more.
Enter Shikari â Album TBC
Enter Shikari will be bouncing back with a brand new album after their successful âWe Can Breathe In Spaceâ¦â single and month-long tour of the UK in recent months.
Gallows â Album TBC
Watford punks Gallows are back from one of the most anticipated albums of 2009. After a couple of years touring their earlier material, Frank Carterâs boys are going to be raging with brand new material next year!
Billy Talent â Album TBC
